Yoga props can be an excellent way to support you in your yoga practice as you stretch, bend and move.

Props for yoga can be as simple as blankets, mats, blocks, straps, and pillows or as sophisticated as finely crafted wooden benches and headstand specialty products.

Whether those props are designed to open your hips, support your back or release your neck, there are a wide range of yoga props available to support your well being as you practice yoga.

Here are four popular yoga products that will truly transform your yoga practice, allowing you to go deeper, be more comfortable and truly support you in your practice.

1) Yoga Mat – A standard yoga mat is essential to any yoga practice, whether you’re a beginner or seasoned practitioner.

Commonly known as a “sticky mat”, a good quality yoga mat will allow you to safely and comfortably move through your yoga practice without slipping, sliding or falling.

There are many different kinds of yoga mats, starting from your basic every day studio mat, to those with extra cushioning (if you have knee issues or need extra support) to longer mats for taller individuals.

There are even travel yoga mats to easily take your practice with you when you go on vacation. These mats are much smaller than your typical mat and easily roll or fold into a suitcase so you never miss your practice.

2) Hard Blocks – Yoga blocks are designed to help you correct body alignment and improve posture, balance and body strength.

There are literally dozens of ways you can use yoga blocks in your practice to allow you to go deeper and really support you.

Examples include:

  • Using a block under your hand to support you in Triangle Pose
  • Under your bolster as you lie in a supine pose over your bolster
  • Under each hand in Pyramid Pose

3) Bolsters – Bolsters have to truly be the most wonderful yoga pose ever created. There are both round yoga bolsters as well as rectangular ones.

Bolsters are often used under the knees in Savasana at the end of class and you’ll often see bolsters in a Restorative Yoga class.

They provide a delicious level of comfort and support so you truly get the most out of your yoga practice every time.

4) Straps – Yoga straps allow you to stretch and lengthen specific muscles.

Use a yoga strap around your foot in Half Happy Baby pose or around both feet in a Seated Forward Fold to allow you to go deeper into the pose.
