Yup it happens. We try to be as mindful and in the moment as we can, but sometimes even the most careful of us can get an injury. Sprains and strains are two very common and different forms of injury. As yoga practitioners it is very wise to know how to work with your body while you are healing from an injury.
A sprain is an injury of the ligaments or joint-capsules. Over-stretching or tearing of these structures can create unstable joints and can take a very long time to heal depending on severity.
A strain is an injury involving muscles or tendons. Chronic strains can build up inflammatory response over time, developing conditions such as RSD or tennis elbow.
If you are injured in any way – be sure to consult with your doctor on appropriate treatment and when to resume your yoga practice. Inform your instructor before your class if you are feeling discomfort and remember to listen to your body. Healing requires patience and love. When you understand compassion for yourself, you will know how to give true compassion to others.
