Here is a basic recipe that you can modify to create your own granola from your favourite ingredients.
Basic Granola
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup (or more) of your favourite nuts. Try toasted almonds, walnuts or even peanuts.
- 1/2 cup toasted sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup coconut
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
- 1 cup (or more) of your favourite dried fruit. Try raisins, apricots or craisins
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1/2 cup sweetener. Try liquid honey, molasses, agave, or maple syrup – this will take some experimentation depending on your taste
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp allspice, nutmeg or a pinch of clove
- Mix the oats, nuts and seeds in a large bowl
- Drizzle oil and sweetener onto mix
- Toss in fruit and spices
- Mix everything together until evenly coated and then pour out into a baking pan
- Bake at a (low temperature) below 200 degrees for approximately 40 minutes, turning it every ten minutes to ensure everything browns evenly
Play with this recipe – adding seasonal nuts and dried fruits or altering types of sweeteners and spices. For a special treat add chocolate chips to the mix once the recipe has cooled. Post your favourite combinations in our comments section!
