If you’re like most people, you want to spend as much time outside in the warm spring and summer months as you possibly can. Summers are short here in Canada so nice weather is invaluable!
Rather than having to choose between your indoor yoga class and getting out into nature, why not simple take your yoga practice outdoors?
Here are some ways that you can easily practice yoga outside to enjoy all the elements of nature while reducing stress:
(1) Grab your mat and find a grassy spot, nearby park or even the beach – Check your local parks, beaches etc to see if an outdoor yoga class might already exist in your neighborhood or near
your office. Or, head to a nearby park or beach to practice yoga quietly on your own or with a friend.
(2) Your backyard – Wake up early and roll your mat out in your backyard for a few minutes before you head off to work. Or find time after work to practice yoga outside. All you need is your mat.
(3) A rooftop patio or garden – These spots are often underused and even forgotten about but they make great places for yoga as they typically have incredible views, there are no strangers to gawk at you and they’re usually free. See if your office or condo building has a rooftop patio.
Here are some tips to get the most out of your Outdoor Yoga practice:
-Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated
-Dress in layers in case the weather suddenly becomes cooler or hotter
-Wear sunscreen if necessary
-You may wish to wear sunglasses to avoid the sun’s harsh glare
-You may also want to have a separate yoga mat that you only use outside. Yoga mats are quite porous, like a sponge, so can easily become dirty with stones, mud or debris. To clean your mat, wipe it down with some essential oil spray. We like this one.
