No longer content to just put a garden gnome in their photos and call it original, snap happy people around the world have started a new fad called planking, and it really is taking the world by storm. The idea is that they make their horizontal bodies as straight and rigid as possible, ideally propped up on something bizarre, and voila – plank! There are dozens of sites on the internet dedicated to the the planking craze, where fanatics can post their planked photos for all to see. And as is the case with anything that takes the world by storm, the critics have already started to spoof it. Our favorite retaliation to planking, found here, suggests other similarly arbitrary physical configurations in which to take and share photos. Of course, our corporate yoga clients, and anyone who has a yoga practice, know that the plank is a foundational yoga pose, so practicing planking can in fact improve core strength and stretch the muscles around the spine. To her list, then, we’d love to add “warrioring” (placing the feet on two different objects and stretching the arms out in both directions), “twisting” (twisting cross body to touch one object with the hands and another with the feet), “splitsing” (obviously reserved for the more supple yogis), and “lunging” (which would be especially interesting as a series of photos of the person lunging accross a longer distance). If nothing else, planking – or whichever variation you choose – can help keep you entertained and active on those lunch breaks you don’t have corporate yoga….just stay safe while you do it!
